Key Highlights of the J J Hawaiian BBQ Experience
When exploring the offerings at J J Hawaiian BBQ, several aspects consistently stand out to diners, solidifying its reputation in the local community. These highlights reflect the restaurant's core philosophy:
Authentic Island Marinades: The foundation of any great Hawaiian BBQ lies in its marinades. J J Hawaiian BBQ excels here, utilizing proprietary blends that infuse meats like kalbi short ribs and teriyaki chicken with deep, complex flavors. These marinades are carefully balanced, often featuring ingredients that provide that signature sweet-and-savory profile without overpowering the natural taste of the high-quality proteins used.
Generous Portions and Value: Reflecting the generous nature often associated with island hospitality, the restaurant is known for providing substantial, satisfying portions. This commitment to value ensures that guests leave feeling fully nourished, making it an excellent choice for a substantial meal that caters to hearty appetites.
The Signature Plate Lunch Concept: Central to Hawaiian dining culture is the "plate lunch," and J J Hawaiian BBQ executes this perfectly. Typically featuring a main protein served alongside scoops of rice and a side salad or macaroni salad, this format offers a complete, well-rounded meal that is both convenient and deeply comforting. It’s the quintessential way to experience the breadth of their menu.
A Welcoming, Casual Atmosphere: The dining environment at the Alma Street location is intentionally relaxed and unpretentious. It fosters an atmosphere where guests can truly unwind and enjoy their meal without formality. This casual setting perfectly complements the robust, down-to-earth nature of the barbecue itself, encouraging repeat visits for everyday dining.
These elements combine to create a dining destination that feels both familiar and excitingly new. It’s this thoughtful execution of island tradition that keeps patrons returning to 1170 Alma St.

Delicious food for this type of restaurant and lots of chicken, beef, pork, and vegetable options. There are also multiple noodle and rice options. There is a lot of turnover so the food is usually fresh and hot when I’ve been there. The staff is always friendly and some are multilingual. There are several tables so you can sit there and eat. The parking lot isn’t huge, but you can park across the street. Also, great value as well. The portions are so large we usually eat it as 2 meals, that is if we can stop ourselves. Haha

I have to agree with other reviewers that this is a hidden gem. I'm a white guy that loves Chinese buffets, but I also lived in Hawaii and love Hawaiian food. So whoever put these two together is a genius. I went with a vegetarian friend … More

Love the food here. They're always running out even if you're there an hour before closing. They will fill your container up such much that you need to put pressure on it to close it! Cheap but tasty even the Hawaiian bbq plates More
